Well I made it! Wasn't sure I was gonna but I was thinking about this challenge all week. It's Music Mayhem for the Macabre Monday Challenge #036. Your project should reflect words or images inspired by a song (preferably a sort of creepy one). I knew right off I wanted to do the Beatles "Eleanor Rigby". When that song first was popular I'd gotten a clock radio with a sleep timer for Christmas and started to try to go to sleep to music. (I'm pretty sure I was in Jr. High)I swear, every time I was drifting off I'd hear those manic strings start and I'd be snapped awake. Then I couldn't get the words out of my head...particularly...
"waits at the window, wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door. Who is it for?"
It creeped me right out, enough so, that I'd have to get up for awhile and go watch tv with my parents to calm down. So here's my jar. I made a shaped card with Cricut Design Studio using the jar from Doodlecharms. The shadow cut I did in some K@Co paper that reminded me of old wallpaper that you'd see through the jar on the table. I'm thinking this would have been an old jar so I cut the layers out of frosted acrylic I got from the now defunct Short Cuts. I stamped Clover from Stampotique again (gotta get more heads) in Staz-On on the back piece of acrylic. The lid is done in matte metallic paper, distressed and some Distress Stickles added to sort of look like rust. I'm figuring old lonely Eleanor would have kept a rose from a long departed suitor near her jar so I glued on one of my dried "black" roses from the garden and sort of picked it apart a bit to make it look creepier. Then I tattered a faded fiber ribbon and tied it around the jar as a finishing touch. Yeah, this is definitely in the "who will I be sending this card to?" catagory. LOL
Wow. You did a lot of work on this creepy one. lol If I was into this I would say it's awesome. I am leaving something on my blog for you (in a few minutes)
ReplyDeleteLove it!!
ReplyDeleteI guess we know what NOT to get Sandy for Xmas! sheesh! big old baby! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI love this Donna and adore the idea of this, thank you so much for sharing the story behind the creation. I actually had looked at this site for the challenge but nothing really came to me for it. Love the use of acrylic with this as well...I LOVE this!!!
I think it is good that I waas not able to understand much English when I was 12 or 13 years old. Because then, I loved the Beatles very much. But they never creeped me out. And when I grew older and could understand the words, I never was scared by the face in the jar. Now, I always think of a woman that is so lonely, that she has to put the face that she uses when she meet nice people (or that was thought to be her face at her wedding) in a glas jar. So sad.
ReplyDeleteBut after reading your interpretation I will now feel a little thrill and think about the creepy part. Seems to be that the Beatles made songs scarier than they are thought of.
I love your face jar. I think it perfectly illustrates the song. Its full of unfulfilled wishes and lost hopes.
Thanks for your comment, too.
Donna, send this one to sandy E.! ROFLMAO!!! I am on the phone with her now. LOL

creepy........but cute
ReplyDeleteDonna, loved your story!!! I agree this is creepy cute, but I think I like it -- it's unique!
ReplyDeleteIf I can come up with some macabre song from my "days", this sounds like a challenge I could like! Probably won't come up with a thing, but I can feel my mind already sifting -- LOL!
I think this is an absolutely marvelous card with a magical interpretation of a childhood vision. Creepy, yes! and in the best sense of the word!!
ReplyDeleteI never had that picture in my head from the song. I had an Aunt who would never be "caught dead" going outside the house without "putting her face on". The problem was that most of the time she stayed home and never really took the old "put on face" off. She always seems to have black smugedy smeared eyes and cakey cheeks. And the worst was the fact that there were bits of her face all over the place. She always had coffee cups, highball glasses, overflowing ash trays filled with butts that had the smeared orangey-red on them. Then the tissues laying around half used with bits of color on them....(shudder)
So when I heard the song I saw a big ole jar of makeup that had to be smeared on before she could go out.
Again, love the card, you are more than welcome to send it to me!!! Oz
Very creepy But so wonderfully creative Donna! I always thought it was her make up in the jar you know as in put your slap on to face the world! lol! Fabulous work of art!

Love your card - the image is so unconventional - it brings out the Rebel in me!
ReplyDeleteOh my Donna...are you sure you didn't go to the wine fest BEFORE you made this one?!!
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of a shrunken head in a jar...creepy, but oh-so-creative! That's why we all keep coming back, because your creativity is never boring! LOL!
:D
Who knew such creepiness could be so cute ...you almost want to grab her out of that jar and give her a much needed hug. Very very cute, my friend.

ReplyDeleteLove it! I am a huge fan of the Torrente images, but never knew how to use the head images. Nice job. Reminds me of the Dead Kennedys song that references a jar with Hitler's brain in it.
ReplyDeleteLove the jar... but the face is scaring me :-(
ReplyDelete[I get scared very easily so it is no wonder]
